The Catering GCSE gives students the opportunity to learn about the catering industry, develop their practical catering skills and learn how to make a wide variety of food products. There are four main areas of study: The Catering Industry Nutrition and Menu Planning Food Preparation Technological Developments Assessment Practical Assessment – 40% (one practical examination in the Spring term of Year 10, the other in the Spring term of Year 11). For these you will be set a practical task. You will have to devise a suitable menu, give reasons for your choice, plan your work and order all equipment or ingredients. When you have completed the task you will write an evaluation. Theory Examination – 40% Work Experience – 20% Students must complete their Year 11 Work Experience* in a catering establishment. The write up of their experience is worth 20% of the GCSE. *See Work Experience Link on the left-hand menu
