GCSE Drama requires students to work creatively and practically as individuals and in groups. Improvisation forms the core of the course and students develop drama skills and explore issues, ideas and feelings relating to their own lives and those of others in a workshop environment. A variety of texts, including a full-length play, are studied in a practical way. Students devise and perform presentations to an audience. In Year 10, skills are built to prepare students for the practical exams in Year 11. As well as drama skills, students will develop personal and social skills which improve self-confidence, are transferable to other areas and will be of benefit in the workplace. All examination work takes place in Year 11 and consists of: Unit 1: Drama Exploration 30% - A series of teacher-assessed practical lessons based on improvisation around a theme or issue. - Documentary response (maximum 2,000 words). Unit 2 Exploring Play Texts 30% - A series of teacher-assessed practical lessons exploring a full length play. - Documentary response (maximum 1,000 words). - Documentary response to live theatre (maximum 2,000 words). Unit 3: Drama Performance 40% - Students devise their own drama presentations to an audience in small groups and are examined externally on their individual performances. - Students choosing Drama as an option must be able to work as part of a team, organising and committing themselves to after-school rehearsals as part of their preparation.
