English skills are tested in most other GCSE examinations as well as in
English Language and English Literature. This will give students two GCSEs
in English. Where appropriate, some students may be entered for a single
GCSE in English.
There are two tiers of entry for both exams: Higher (grades A* - C) and Foundation
(C – G). Each tier follows the same syllabus, but tiering is decided in Year 11
in relation to classwork, assessment grades and mock exam results.
Both GCSEs are a combination of controlled coursework and exams. English Language
explores written and spoken language; while English Literature works on texts from
the three main genres of Prose, Poetry and Drama.
2010 marks a change of direction for GCSE English as it becomes more relevant to
students through its functionality. At the time of writing, specifications have yet
to be approved by the appropriate authority. Further information will be given,
via the newsletter, if there are any major changes.
