The media plays a very important role in modern society, providing us with information, entertainment and education. In addition, with the advancement of modern technology, the media plays an important role in the shaping of attitudes and values. This course is designed to help students develop their practical and critical understanding of the role mass media plays in society today. The skills students will develop in the course: - Analysis of a range of media texts - Gain a broad knowledge of the commercial nature of modern media production - Consider the consumption of a given media text, by a range of different audiences - Show creativity and originality in the creation of media products - Engage in an ever changing world of media technologies Areas students can study: Television Newspapers Films Music Comics Music Videos Radio Coursework - 60% Two written coursework assignments: 1. introductory assignment, focusing on the opening of a film 2. cross media assignment, comparing the representation in music videos and music magazines. One Practical Assignment: Students can choose from a bank of practical tasks, which include: - a five minute audio sample for a talk-cased radio show aimed at a specific audience - four pages (including the homepage) for a website aimed at a specific audience - four pages (including the front cover or front page) for a magazine or newspaper aimed at a specific audience - an advertising campaign for television. Controlled Test - 40% The controlled test is set at two tiers: Foundation (C-G grades) and Higher (A*-D.) The topic for the exam changes every year and is based on pre-release materials and students will be expected to prepare for the test through independent research. Previous topics have included quiz shows, sitcoms, music press, comedy films and newspapers.
